In Chinese culture, jade symbolizes prosperity, success, and good fortune. It’s known as “the stone of heaven ” and it’s said that “gold is valuable, but jade is priceless”. Her gift was not only a lovely necklace to be enjoyed but also blessings for a prosperous and loving future for me and my family – a much greater gift to be treasured.

With good taste and a limited budget, she often preferred to make her own clothes… and that woman always had STYLE. My Mom grew tired of me knotting the bobbin thread on hers, so I got my first sewing machine when I was 6. I was hooked!

From infancy, our culture, life, and experiences teach us what is expected of our actions and communications. Most of us understand the meaning of the word “no” by the age of 9 months. This is the beginning of a life-long training and sensitivity to what our family, community and society expect from us.

As we reflect on these past months, amidst the challenges, we recognize the beauty that each of you has brought to our lives. It seems like a simple question: “Is it bad to be late?” For me, the answer always seemed straight-forward. My Dad taught me that if you weren’t 10 minutes early, you were late. And that seemed like sage advice.

My Mom was a seamstress, potter, clown at local festivals and she made wedding cakes on the side. Our home was filled with tools to make their projects, dreams and lives better. From sewing machines and the rose piping tip to arc welders and helium tanks, we had it all.
